Wireless CCTV Camera
♦ How to Reduce False Alarms
By Michael I HarperWireless CCTV cameras with built-in motion detection are rapidly replacing “dumb” analogue CCTV cameras, but many of these new cameras cannot tell the difference between a burglar and the sun coming out – leading to many false alarms. Fortunately, something called “Intelligent Image Analysis” has come to the rescue, as this article explains.
More and more people are ditching their old “dumb” CCTV cameras and buying wireless internet CCTV systems because of the wealth of things that they can do with these new “intelligent” cameras – such seeing their property, live, from anywhere in the world, and receiving alerts by email and even SMS text message when movement is detected.
Unfortunately, many of these people are discovering the sad fact that their cameras are not as clever as they thought, and will blindly raise the alarm every time the sun comes out or when a street light comes on. Of course, every single time this happens, the unsuspecting person will get an email or even a text message alert at whatever time of day or night, and this can be a real pain.
For example, if there is a tree branch blowing in the breeze and triggering the camera to raise an alarm every few seconds, this can mount up to literally thousands of alert emails or text messages over the course of a day. Worse still, because the camera so often “cries wolf”, an alert caused by a real intruder may well be ignored and “lost” among the thousands of false alarms.
This is where “Intelligent Image Analysis” comes into play. This is not actually a feature of the camera itself, but a program that sits on a computer server, sometimes on the other side of the world from the property where the camera is located.
This web-based program works rapidly when it receives an alarm message from a camera. It examines each image sent by the camera and interprets it using a complex set of rules. This means that when there is a change of light levels due to the sun coming out from behind a cloud, for example, the system knows that there is no need to panic.
On the other hand, when the movements of an intruder are detected, the system understands the difference and raises the alarm. All of this analysis happens within a fraction of a second, so that the alert messages are still sent without delay.
Intelligent Image Analysis greatly reduces the number of false alarms and in doing so takes wireless CCTV camera systems to the next level.
