Infrared security cameras can see through the dark because the chips that receive the light are sensitive to the infrared part of the spectrum. These chips can be sensitive to only infrared or a combination of infrared and visible light. This allows infrared security cameras to see through the dark.

The use of infrared security cameras is very common when auxiliary lights can not be added to light a scene or a room(such as a photographic darkroom) cannot be lit.Light is divided into several wavelengths. In very general terms, the three parts of the spectrum are ultra violet, visible and infrared.
The human eye sees through the use of the visible part of the spectrum of light. The other wavelengths of light are invisible to the human eye.Heat of any type emits light in the infrared part of the spectrum. The heat of a human body can be visible in the infrared range.
Infrared detectors are used in medicine to see variations in the temperature of the human body. One of the disadvantages to security cameras in general is that as the lighting of an area decreases, the image picked up by the camera fades to black unless lighting is provided for the camera.
One way to overcome this disadvantage is to have infrared security cameras installed. There are cameras available today that have duel chip sets or chip sets that can function in both the visible and infrared parts of the spectrum. When the light level falls low enough, the camera switches from the visible color spectrum to the B/W which is sensitive to infrared light automatically.
This switch along with the addition of infrared illuminators permits the camera to function in the dark and insures that an event is not going to be missed.A significant advantage to having an infrared security camera is that an intruder does not see visible light. The use of an infrared security camera can be considered a “sneaky” way of protecting property however in a world that can often seem to be full of intruders, the infrared security camera may just be the only tool that can fill a part of the overall security system.
A camera system that is only capable of capturing images during only part of the day can be worthless at times. The only way to be sure that images can be captured 24-7 without additional lighting is through the use of an infrared security camera.
